Vivaldi – Old and New!

Join Hallam Choral Society this autumn as we bring to life two vibrant and uplifting choral masterpieces.

The programme features Vivaldi’s magnificent Gloria – one of the most joyful and beloved works in the choral repertoire – alongside A Season to Sing, Joanna Forbes L’Estrange’s acclaimed modern reimagining of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. Blending memorable melodies from the original with fresh texts inspired by the changing seasons, this contemporary work has quickly become a favourite with choirs and audiences alike.

Joanna told us: “When I had this crazy idea to turn the world’s most famous set of violin concertos into a choral work little did I know that it would become an instant global hit, with performances around the world as well as throughout the UK. People like the combination of familiar tunes with words that give the music new life. Prepare to be entertained with birdsong, bagpipes, cuckoos and thunderstorms! There’s also an important message right at the end which may bring a tear to your eye…”

From the exuberant choruses of the Gloria to the evocative colours of A Season to Sing, this concert promises an evening of warmth, beauty and musical celebration. Whether you are a long-time lover of choral music or discovering it for the first time, join us for a memorable journey through the seasons and one of the Baroque era’s greatest masterpieces.

We’re looking forward to dusting off our copies of the Gloria, last performed by Hallam Choral Soc in 2019, and getting our teeth into the new-to-us (and to you?) version of the Four Seasons.
